What Does the Bible Say About Work?

Genesis  2: 2 - 3
2 By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work.  3 And God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done.

Genesis  31: 38 - 42
38 "I have been with you for twenty years now. Your sheep and goats have not miscarried, nor have I eaten rams from your flocks.  39 I did not bring you animals torn by wild beasts; I bore the loss myself. And you demanded payment from me for whatever was stolen by day or night.  40 This was my situation: The heat consumed me in the daytime and the cold at night, and sleep fled from my eyes.  41 It was like this for the twenty years I was in your household. I worked for you fourteen years for your two daughters and six years for your flocks, and you changed my wages ten times.  42 If the God of my father, the God of Abraham and the Fear of Isaac, had not been with me, you would surely have sent me away empty-handed. But God has seen my hardship and the toil of my hands, and last night he rebuked you."

Genesis  39: 21 - 23
21 the Lord was with him; he showed him kindness and granted him favor in the eyes of the prison warden.  22 So the warden put Joseph in charge of all those held in the prison, and he was made responsible for all that was done there.  23 The warden paid no attention to anything under Joseph's care, because the Lord was with Joseph and gave him success in whatever he did.

Exodus  16: 23
23 He said to them, "This is what the Lord commanded: 'Tomorrow is to be a day of rest, a holy Sabbath to the Lord. So bake what you want to bake and boil what you want to boil. Save whatever is left and keep it until morning.' "

Joshua  1: 16
16 Then they answered Joshua, "Whatever you have commanded us we will do, and wherever you send us we will go.

Ruth  2: 7
7 She said, 'Please let me glean and gather among the sheaves behind the harvesters.' She went into the field and has worked steadily

Nehemiah  3: 5
5 The next section was repaired by the men of Tekoa, but their nobles would not put their shoulders to the work under their supervisors.

Psalm  127: 2
2 In vain you rise early and stay up late, toiling for food to eat—for he grants sleep to those he loves.

Ecclesiastes  2: 18 - 23
18 I hated all the things I had toiled for under the sun, because I must leave them to the one who comes after me.  19 And who knows whether he will be a wise man or a fool? Yet he will have control over all the work into which I have poured my effort and skill under the sun. This too is meaningless.  20 So my heart began to despair over all my toilsome labor under the sun.  21 For a man may do his work with wisdom, knowledge and skill, and then he must leave all he owns to someone who has not worked for it. This too is meaningless and a great misfortune.  22 What does a man get for all the toil and anxious striving with which he labors under the sun?  23 All his days his work is pain and grief; even at night his mind does not rest. This too is meaningless.

Haggai  2: 4
4 But now be strong, O Zerubbabel,' declares the Lord. 'Be strong, O Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest. Be strong, all you people of the land,' declares the Lord, 'and work. For I am with you,' declares the Lord Almighty.

Matthew  25: 21
21 "His master replied, 'Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master's happiness!'

Mark  6: 31
31 Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he said to them, "Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest."

1 Corinthians  15: 58
58 Therefore, my dear brothers, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.

Ephesians  6: 6 - 8
6 Obey them not only to win their favor when their eye is on you, but like slaves of Christ, doing the will of God from your heart.  7 Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not men,  8 because you know that the Lord will reward everyone for whatever good he does, whether he is slave or free.

Philippians  1: 6
6 being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.

Colossians  3: 23 - 24
23 Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men,  24 since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.
